Special guest at Rumson-Fair Haven’s football practice/camp tidbits/story links

Special guest at Rumson-Fair Haven’s football practice/camp tidbits/story links

An NBA standout grabs a glimpse of Rumson’s practice, camp tidbits

While taking in my first football practice of the preseason over at Rumson-Fair Haven, which is expected to challenge for a second straight Patriot Division title, I was also there to do a story on a new Rumson resident who is working out at the school.
He also took a seat in the stands for a little bit to check out the action. Minnesota Timberwolves guard Randy Foye, the former Newark East Side and Villanova star, was in the house. He said he also used to play quarterback while in high school and asked who was good on the Rumson squad. He lives in Rumson, where his business manager also lives, and has been training at the high school during the offseason. I’ll have a full story up on that later.

Alas, Foye declined to discuss the Timberwolves’ recent mega-trade of franchise forward Kevin Garnett
to the Celtics that pretty much put Minnesota into rebuilding mode.
Before moving to the Shore, Foye’s other connection to the Shore
Conference was that in 2002 his Newark East Side team ran into one of
the best Shore Conference boys hoops teams in history, the Neptune
squad that featured Taquan Dean (Louisville), Terrance Todd (Fairfield)
and Marques Alston (Monmouth U). Foye had a strong game from what I remember, scoring over 30 in a lop-sided loss to
the Scarlet Fliers in the NJSIAA Group III playoffs at Rutgers.
Minnesota Timberwolves guard Randy Foye, a former star at Newark East Side and Villanova and a new Rumson resident, takes in part of Rumson-Fair Haven’s football practice on Tuesday.

     I
covered that game, and all I remember was Foye just being outnumbered,
as he played well, but Neptune had too much overall talent. From what I
recall, Alston had a dunkfest in the second half when the Fliers blew
the game open.
As for Rumson’s season outlook, the full preview will be out on Aug. 17, but for now a few quick-hitters. The Bulldogs will be using a tight end a little more this year after predominantly going to three-wide receiver sets the past few seasons, and return QB Matt Wassel and top WR Ryan Kirchner. John Corneliusen, the former Mater Dei head coach who stepped down after this past season because he is getting ready to go to graduate school, is now the quarterbacks coach for the Bulldogs.
They have an entirely new secondary, but it appears that they are good athletes who were all stuck behind a good, senior-laden secondary last year. Tailback Ryan Korn, who grew up in Rumson, moved to Tennessee early in high school and moved back before last season, appears to be healthy after a badly torn hamstring hampered him throughout last season. He could be a game-breaker for Rumson, in addition to being one of the top lacrosse players in the area.
Every year, Rumson coach Shane Fallon seems to scavenge a tall player from the basketball team who he puts at wide receiver to just go up and catch jumpballs on fade routes. This year’s version is 6-foot-5 and over 200 pounds – he’ll be in the preview on Friday along with plenty of other info. I’ll also be going on a whirlwind tour of some camps in the next few days, as will our two staff writers, Bob Badders and Scott Clayton, so check back here for more camp info.

One quick baseball note, tomorrow is the deadline for drafted players to sign with their teams or go to college under the new MLB rules. The three locals – St. Rose pitcher Anthony Ranaudo (LSU, Texas Rangers), Christian Brothers Academy pitcher Kyle Slate (Maine, Phillies) and Red Bank Catholic shortstop J.C. Menna (James Madison, Pirates) have all elected not to sign and to attend college, barring a last-second play by the Rangers for Ranaudo, who turned down a lucrative offer from the Brewers before the draft and subsequently fired his advisor for passing on the offer.

  • Looks like former Keyport star Ken Cattouse, who ranks No. 2 on the all-time state rushing list in New Jersey, will be more of a factor in the passing game this season for Troy University.
  • Football is getting cranked up everywhere, including in South Jersey, among some teams that the Shore could run into in the playoffs.
  • It can’t be good when your season preview story is on your kicker.
  • Lindenwold, a South Jersey Group I school, just picked up a Division I-A prospect and one of the top 15 running backs in the state, a transfer from Camden Catholic.
  • Seton Hall Prep pitcher Rick Porcello, the state’s best baseball player from this past spring, is about to get PAID by the Tigers.
  • I guess steroid testing has done some good in bringing baseball back to earth.
  • Is anybody really ever an “innocent bystander” when they’re hanging out in a strip club in the middle of the night?
  • Jorge Posada in a Mets uniform next year? That would be a little weird.

Quick Monday tidbits/links

Quick Monday tidbits/links

Some quick basketball, football info/story links

The first football story of the preseason is up with plenty more stuff to come, and it also includes the release schedule for our previews so you will want to check that out.
I will have a boys basketball feature most likely coming tomorrow and we might possibly have a girls hoops feature a little later in the week before we dive headlong into football for the next couple months. Plus, the Mets restored order for at least a day and the weather is nice, so not bad for a Monday. Although, Northwestern’s football season is looking pretty depressing on the horizon. It can’t be good when most of the preview mags I’ve flipped through have predicted my Wildcats to finish 11th in a league known as the Big Ten.
Here are some quick story links/notes of interest:

  • Former Middletown South linebacker Nick Macaluso’s new coach at Stanford is making waves already. Monmouth University fans will also remember Jim Harbaugh as the coach of the University of San Diego, which beat the Hawks 27-7 in the inaugural Gridiron Classic last year. Macaluso projects as a reserve linebacker as a redshirt freshman.
  • Warning: Do not sit down at a poker table for a casual game with former Christian Brothers Academy and University of Pennsylvania basketball standout Tim Begley, who now plays hoops overseas in Germany. He recently took home over $58,000 in the World Series of Poker to finish 129th out of 6,358 entries.
  • Early commitments, like those of Art Forst and Mike Mele from Manasquan the past two years, are getting more common.
  • One of the running backs from Somerville that Manasquan ate for lunch during the state playoffs recently is now in the mix as a kick returner for Rutgers.
  • I don’t care where Jerry Glanville is coaching, as long as I never have to listen to him be a commentator on an NFL game ever again.
  • Essential reading for NFL fans.
  • I know there are blogs on pretty much everything these days, but prison basketball?
  • Couldn’t say I was too psyched about this as a Jets fan.
  • Finally, you know the new ESPN fantasy commercials where the fake owners have a ceremony to honor the players who helped them win the title? The actor thanking Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew in one segment is Matt Donnelly, the younger brother of former Red Bank Regional basketball star Mark Donnelly, the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Sunday links/baseball on the way

Story links, baseball, football stories on the way

I will have a short football story up for Monday detailing some things to watch for in preseason camps in the upcoming weeks, so keep an eye out for that.
Also, I will be catching up with some former Shore baseball standouts at the Jersey Shore Baseball League championship today, so I will keep you updated on the future plans/current whereabouts of some notable names. I also will have a story involving some of the Shore’s returning high school hardball stars coming this week.
Finally, it was nice to see someone from my alma mater, Northwestern QB Brett Basanez, a former Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year who is now trying to latch on with the Carolina Panthers, sling an 85-yard touchdown pass against the Giants on Saturday night.
Instead of going into a full-on rant about how the Mets’ bullpen meltdown has coincided with the Yankees being unbeatable, plus the potential disappearance of the Mets’ home run apple in the new stadium, here are some story links:

  • Former Ocean offensive lineman Lou Eliades could be a starter as a redshirt freshman for my brother’s alma mater, Penn State, this year.
  • Another former Shore Conference offensive lineman, Matawan’s Anthony Grosso (scroll to bottom of story), whose chops I bust at any opportunity for decommitting from Northwestern to go to Florida State, has impressed in the weight room as a freshman. Although, I guess not everybody is fired up about the Seminoles’ freshman class.
  • Long Branch’s Jerett Sanderson looks like he will start as a sophomore at safety for Bowling Green. Another Long Branch product, Darius Morris, looks to be in the mix as a reserve offensive lineman for Temple.
  • My old roommate in college, who was a ******** gambler, would love this story. However, not even he bet on tennis. If you are betting on obscure ATP events, a tire iron to the kneecaps might not be too far down the line in your future because you are out of your mind. My roommate definitely had a few nights of handing me an NBA schedule in a cold sweat and begging me to pick a few winners, or the time we almost got thrown out of a restaurant when he started howling at the TV in agony when Lionel Simmons stepped back and hit what looked like a meaningless 3-pointer instead of a two-pointer in a double-digit loss by the Sacramento Kings to the Seattle Sonics in the playoffs that actually screwed the spread. Oh, the good old days.
  • Every sportswriter in America tired of writing about Barry Bonds (and his good buddy/jailbird Greg Anderson), is loving this Rick Ankiel thing.
  • They’re making a movie out of Jon Krakauer’s book Into the Wild, which is a quick, but riveting read about a guy who ventured into the wilderness to get away from the world and for adventure but ending up dying in Alaska. I knocked it out on a plane flight a few years back and it’s good. Krakauer is better known for “Into Thin Air” about a disastrous ascent of Mount Everest, but this one is good, too. They’re promoting the **** out of it, too, with stories in Esquire, Men’s Journal and the cover of Outside magazine.

Saturday links/baseball features on the way

Saturday links/baseball features on the way

Some football videos and baseball updates

I caught up with former Red Bank Catholic baseball star Ryan Kalish, who is down in Fort Myers, Fla., rehabbing a broken hamate bone in his right hand suffered when swinging.
It ended a season in which he was tearing it up for the Boston Red Sox low A affiliate in the short-season New York-Penn League, the Lowell (Mass.) Spinners. I will have a story up on the home page later today, along with some links to updates on some other former Shore players in the minor leagues.
Stay tuned for boys and girls basketball features next week as well as some features and videos on some current and former Shore Conference baseball players starting Monday, before the football preseason really begins in earnest. There also will be some football features in addition to the previews.
One other quick note from Kalish – his younger brother, Jake, who was a promising quarterback as a freshman last year at Red Bank Regional, has quit football and may be opting to play soccer instead. Jake was also a standout on the Bucs varsity baseball team as a freshman, which is where his future lies, just like his brother. However, that certainly is a blow to RBR’s gridiron squad, which went 1-9 last year.

Some quick links/story suggestions for today:

  • Here’s some highlights from Josh Bakala, the wide receiver who led the Shore in receiving yards last year on his way to being named to the DigitalSports Legends of the Fall All-Star team. He is back for his senior season at Keansburg and has come a long way since he started playing football.
  • I have also obtained secret footage of the new running back at Jackson Liberty High School, which will play its first varsity season this year and is an unknown right now. This player simply cannot be tackled.
  • Mark Richt and Co. are pumped for the Knowshon Era to begin at Georgia. I’ll try to get links to some other former Shore players as the season approaches.
  • This is an old story, but don’t forget that RBC’s very own Donnie Brown, now at UConn, could give Ray Rice a run for his money in the production department this season, although he recently suffered a minor leg injury in camp.
  • Good story in the new Men’s Journal (“Casualties of the NFL”) about former NFL players suffering major medical complications and the league’s shunning of them, which has been a hot topic of late.
  • I don’t know about you, but a cold glass of milk would be the last thing I would want to chug if I was running around in sweltering weather on a football field.
  • Mr. Met for the Hall of Fame!
  • Pitch counts for Little Leaguers means no more overgrown monster from some foreign country or a ringer from the U.S. who looks like he’s 27 pitching the whole game. Where’s the fun in that? (Oh, that’s right, to make sure some kid’s arm doesn’t fall off before he turns 12). Somewhere, Amanda Whurlitzer weeps.
  • It’s only preseason football, but it was still nice to see my Jets roll the Falcons and Kellen Clemens play well because it’s hard for me to believe that Chad Pennington will stay upright for 16 games for the second straight season.
  • Don’t forget that this isn’t the first time there have been accusations of point shaving in the NBA.

Football camps to get in full swing next week/basketball thoughts/links

Football camps to get in full swing next week/basketball thoughts/links

Two-a-days are here, Matawan’s new quarterback, Jackson needs to replace its offensive coordinator/Will Geoff Billet be in it for the long haul at CBA?

The summer doldrums are rapidly coming to an end, as Shore football teams begin two-a-days on Monday (just in time for what looks like some sweltering days).
We’ll have previews coming fast and furious for the whole rest of August, mixed with feature stories, videos, preview shows and everything else we can think up. The release schedule is pretty much set and will be out on Monday when the real practices begin and everyone is settling in their cubicles wishing they were out watching football instead.
I haven’t caught up with Matawan coach Joe Martucci yet, but there has been plenty of offseason buzz about a new freshman quarterback for the Huskies whom people have said has Andrew Mandeville talent and beyond. This is reportedly his highlight video from Pop Warner, modestly titled “Young Vick” (for the football side, not the horrible-dog-cruelty-accusations side). He wears No. 7 and could start as a freshman with the graduation of last year’s QB, Julian Sonnenfeld, and we’ll have plenty more on him soon along with the rest of the Huskies, who return an offense with star power in the form of electric wideout/kick returner Kyle Hardy and running back J.T. Anderson. I have to admit, this video is pretty crazy if this is really him, although varsity football is a whole other level than this, but still. Don’t forget, Mandeville (now at Monmouth University) took some lumps before becoming a legend at Raritan. In some other Mandeville news, unfortunately his younger brother, Marcus, who saw plenty of action at running back last year as a sophomore, has been dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons, according to Rockets coach Bob Generelli.
While Scott Goodale’s ascension from highly successful Jackson wrestling coach to the head wrestling coach at Rutgers was well deserved, it also leaves a hole at offensive coordinator for the Jaguars’ football team. Goodale also served as the OC under current head coach Mike Smith and former head man Reggie Lawrence, and helped fashion offensive attacks that helped Jackson reach four sectional finals, winning three of them. The most likely candidate to replace him is current assistant Bill Rankin, a former quarterback at Monmouth University from Toms River. The Jaguars have had a 1,000-yard rusher for 11 straight seasons, but graduated their top back, Mark Schiavone. They could be throwing more this year behind QB John Cirri, a transfer who has a year of ups and downs under his belt but has received Division I interest.
I’ll be coming with plenty more preseason tidbits and burning questions/things to watch for in the coming week and beyond.

On the boys basketball front, Christian Brothers Academy’s hiring of Geoff Billet surprised absolutely no one, so now the question is one of longevity. Billet is the Shore equivalent of new Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin , who became only the third head coach in the last 38 years for the Steelers in a business where coaches change every five minutes, or as long-suffering Jets fans once lived with Bill Belichick, they shockingly turn the job down in a matter of hours.
Billet is only CBA’s third coach since 1962 (take that Steelers!). Vinny Cox went 350-100 from 1962 to 1980 before Ed Wicelinski took over and won 625 games in 27 seasons. That’s a pretty daunting legacy for the 30-year-old Billet, who played for Wicelinski. In this day and age, you don’t see too many coaches embarking on 20-year careers at the same school, and I wonder if any type of promise of a certain amount of longevity by Billet had to be made to the administration when he came aboard or whether the buzz around his name as a college assistant was enough. I played against Billet in the mid-90’s and I remember him being a very smart and patient player, not forcing anything that wasn’t there. We’ll see if that patience extends to his coaching career at his alma mater, which is obviously one of the crown jewel jobs in the state as far as a steady influx of talent that at least will keep them at or near the top of the heap locally.

Finally, some sports links/story suggestions (non-scholastic):

  • You need to check out the story on message board mayhem (“Fanning the Fire”) involving Arkansas coach Houston Nutt in the current ESPN the Magazine with Prince Fielder on the cover.
  • As for the Barry Bonds record, I have to say I’m pretty indifferent. I was actually down in Atlantic City when it happened, and four drunk guys booed loudly for about 10 seconds, and the 20 or so other people in the room glanced over at the TV, shrugged, and went right back to their conversations. That pretty much sums it up for me.
  • Good to see the return of Rick Ankiel as a position player for the Cardinals. As a Mets fan, I would also like to thank him for his Ricky Vaughn (before he got his glasses) performance in the 2000 NLCS.
  • Everybody is starting to roll out their good news/bad news stories about Beijing and the upcoming Olympics. This week’s Sports Illustrated feature (in the one with Bonds on the cover) is a little more of an overview, while ESPN’s is more traveling among the people.
  • It looks like Pacman Jones’ wrestling career is over before it barely got started. Nothing like latching on to pro wrestling to improve your image. I think he should just go straight to backyard and alleyway fighting, like Kimbo Slice or Jean Claude Van Damme in Lionheart.
  • If you produce, people forget the bad stuff you’ve done. Got to love pro sports. Or college sports. Or high school sports.
  • I know this has been all over the web and on TV, but this guy is too funny. There’s just something about that look on his face that gets me every time. This would be the greatest halftime show ever at a high school game if he came out and started breaking it down.
