SHORE FOOTBALL ALUMNI UPDATE, 9/27/07

Updates on former Shore Conference players now playing at the collegiate level.

Here is this week’s update. As always, if I’m missing anyone, e-mail me at [email protected].

  • The buzz around Georgia redshirt freshman RB Knowshon Moreno (Middletown South) only grows louder and louder after he ran for 74 yards and a touchdown in a 26-23 win over Alabama. He was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his performance against the Crimson Tide and opposing coaches have noticed. The Bulldogs are at home against Mississippi on Saturday. Defensive tackle Kade Weston (Red Bank) has become an important part of Georgia’s defensive line rotation.
  • Linebacker Chris Malleo (Wall) made two tackles for my alma mater, Northwestern, in our (cough, cough) 58-7 loss to Ohio State. Now we welcome Michigan on Saturday. Hey, if Appalachian State beat them….
  • Troy University running back Ken Cattouse (Keyport) exploded for 139 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-31 win over Louisiana-Lafayette for his fourth career 100-yard game. The Trojans face Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday night.
  • Moreno’s old Middletown South teammate, Stanford linebacker Nick Macaluso, had three tackles, one for a loss, in a 55-31 loss to Oregon. Macaluso received his first collegiate start at linebacker in the game. Stanford takes on undefeated Arizona State on Saturday in the Pac-10.
  • Brad Newman (Manasquan) played on special teams in Boston College’s 37-17 win over Navy. The Eagles welcome Massachusetts this Saturday.
  • Tight end Garrett Graham (Brick Memorial) continues to be an offensive factor for Wisconsin, although he did not have a catch in a 17-13 win over Iowa last weekend. The Badgers welcome Michigan State on Saturday for a game on ABC.
  • Donnie (excuse me, Donald or Doanld) Brown (Red Bank Catholic), a UConn running back, helped the Huskies roll to a 34-14 win over Pittsburgh in the Big East by running for 53 yards and a touchdown. Offensive lineman Alex LaMagdelaine (Rumson-FH) also saw time in the win. The Huskies now welcome Akron, where Brian Brikowski (Freehold Twp.) is a freshman linebacker.
  • Rutgers linebacker Kevin Malast (Manchester), who leads the team with 28 tackles, and the rest of the Scarlet Knights, who are now one of the top 10 teams in the nation, face off against Maryland at 3:30 p.m. on ABC on Saturday. Joe Faiella (Freehold Twp.) is a freshman offensive lineman for the Terps.
  • Defensive back Jerett Sanderson (Long Branch) had four tackles in the Long Branch Bowl, as Bowling Green defeated Temple 48-35. Sanderson’s old Green Wave teammate, Darius Morris, started at left guard for Temple, which rolled up 401 yards of offense. Bowling Green hosts Western Kentucky on Saturday, while Temple travels to Army for a game at noon on Saturday.
  • Freshman linebacker Mike Mele (Manasquan) made a tackle in Syracuse’s 38-35 upset of Louisville. The Orange travel to Miami of Ohio on Saturday for a nonconference game.
  • Mele’s older brother, Joe (Manasquan), made six tackles for Northeastern in a 28-10 loss to UC-Davis. Northeastern has a bye this week and will be back on Oct. 6 against James Madison,  where Keith McPherson (Ocean Twp.) is a redshirt freshman. Speaking of James Madison, it will host Villanova on Saturday, which features sophomore defensive end Tim Kukucka.
  • Running back Kaysonne Anderson led New Hampshire with 72 yards on 11 carries in a 52-31 win over Dartmouth. New Hampshire travels to Richmond this Saturday.
  • Villanova is coming off a 34-14 win over UPenn, where Scott Martinho (Middletown South) made one tackle in the loss for the Quakers.
  • Lafayette defensive end Andrew Poulson (Middletown South) made five tackles, one for a loss, in a 28-10 loss to Princeton. The Leopards have a bye this week before facing Columbia, which features freshman defensive lineman Brian England (Raritan), on Oct. 6. England made one tackle for a loss in Columbia’s 31-7 win over Marist, which features quarterback Steve McGrath (Manasquan), who went 1-for-7 with an interception in the game.
  • Linebacker Asil Mulbah (Jackson) had five tackles and a sack for the Mr. Stumps, i.e., Fordham, but it was not enough in a 31-24 loss to Dayton. The Rams travel to Colgate, which features defensive end Ryan Keller (Colts Neck) on Saturday.
  • Monmouth University is 0-3 after a 21-15 loss to Stony Brook, with quarterback Brett Burke (Wall), wideout Chris Kiley (Pt. Boro), tight end Ron Lauch (Wall), wideout Steve Dowens (Middletown South) and linebacker Joe Cella (Jackson) all being factors in the game. The Hawks now face traditional Division I-AA power Delaware, where last year’s Monmouth Regional head coach, Bob Acosta, is now an assistant, and where offensive lineman Anthony Grosso (Matawan) transferred after starting the season at Florida State.
  • Stony Brook senior Josh Dudash (Toms River South) threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns to power the Seawolves’ 21-15 win over Monmouth. Cory Giddings (Ocean Twp.) also had five tackles in the win.
  • Ryan Canary (Pt. Boro) started at center for Maine in a 38-7 loss to UMass. The Bears have a bye and will face Hofstra on Oct. 6. Redshirt freshman Ryan Nani (Toms River North) is also a member of the Bears.

  • Todd Rinaldo (Manasquan) had two tackles, one for a loss, for Bucknell in a 45-14 loss to Richmond. Bucknell welcomes Marist on Saturday.
  • Joe Schroeder (Jackson) hit a 25-yard field goal in Sacred Heart’s 30-23 overtime loss to Duquesne. Fullback Brian Friedman (Point Boro) also had a solid game in the loss. Sacred Heart travels to Wagner on Saturday.
  • Dave Kircher (Manasquan) and Andrew Grando (Manchester) both started on the offensive line in Moravian College’s 44-41 win over Johns Hopkins. Punter Mike Voskian (Manasquan) averaged 40 yards on three punts, with a long of 51 yards, and also placed two punts inside the 20-yard line.
  • The College of New Jersey running back Dan Dornacker (Brick) went over the 100-yard mark for the second straight game in a 13-12 win over LaSalle. TCNJ welcomes Montclair State for the 75th meeting between the two teams on Friday night.
  • Quarterback Mike Jump (Toms River South) went 13-for-24 for 131 yards and a touchdown in Montclair State’s 27-26 win over Wesley. He completed three passes for 39 yards to wideout Jeff Papcun (Raritan). Defensively, Ray Siegmund (Keyport) had six tackles, Devaughn Dortsch (Asbury Park) and John Valkos (Rumson-FH) added five, Derell Sapp (Long Branch) had three, including one for a loss, and Jeremy Mercer (Middletown South) added two.

  • Shane Bigelow (Ocean Twp.) started at center for Widener in a 41-0 loss to Rowan. Senior quarterback Joe Rankin (Toms River North) was recently honored for his academic achievements for Rowan.
  • Chris Swensen (St. John Vianney) blocked a field goal to preserve Muhlenberg’s 14-13 win over Gettysburg. Muhlenberg takes on Johns Hopkins this weekend.
  • Quarterback A.J. Roque (Matawan) and wideout Shane Meyer (Raritan) each had big days in Kean University’s 34-6 win over Morrisville State. Jared Chunn (Monmouth Regional) caught a 44-yard touchdown pass and freshman Chris DiMicco (Lacey) scored on a one-yard touchdown. Rick Jaeger (Raritan) added three catches for 34 yards, and Darryl Jackson (Red Bank) had a tackle on defense. Colin Parsons (Wall) also saw time as the punter and on kickoffs. Kean travels to Buffalo State this Saturday.
